Junior Membership

Opening a children’s saving account is the most effective way to teach your children money management and budgeting skills so they can make smart choices with their money in the future.

Junior Membership of South Dublin Credit Union is open to people under 16 who live or study in our common bond in Stillorgan, Donnybrook, Sandyford, The Beacon, Goatstown, Murphystown, Mount Merrion or the surrounding areas.

What is a Junior Credit Union Account?

  • A Junior is a person under the age of 16
  • A Junior Credit Union Account can only be a single account and the account is in the name of the Child only and is the sole property of the Junior in question

Who can open a Junior account in South Dublin Credit Union?

  • A Parent/Guardian can open an account on behalf of the child if the child is under the age of 7
  • If the child is 7 years or older, the child must come to the South Dublin Credit Union office in Stillorgan with their Parent/Guardian to open an account

What is needed to open a Junior account with South Dublin Credit Union?

The Criminal Justice (Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing) Act 2010 (the “Act”) requires Financial Service providers, including Credit Unions, to implement and operate measures to prevent money laundering.

South Dublin Credit Union is legally obliged under the above Act to obtain and hold identification documentation for all its members.

Identification documents required for Junior Membership of South Dublin Credit Union:

  • Birth Certificate or Passport for the child
  • Proof of Guardianship (if relevant)
  • Permanent address of the Child
  • Parent/Guardians Proof of Address
  • The PPS Number for the child

A child’s PPS Number can be obtained and verified via correspondence from the Department of Social Protection or a Medical Card.

Identification documents required for the Parent/Guardian:

  • Proof of Identity e.g. passport or driver’s license
  • Proof of Address e.g recent bank/credit union statement, utility bill or correspondence from an official government department

Who can Lodge money into a South Dublin Credit Union Junior Savings Account?

  • Anyone can lodge money into the child’s South Dublin Credit Union account eg godparents, grandparents, other relations or friends

Who can Withdraw from a South Dublin Credit Union Junior Savings Account?

If the child is 7 years of age or older, they are the only ones allowed to withdraw money from their account.

If they are under 7 years of age generally the parent or guardian are the only ones permitted to withdraw money from the account. Please note if a parent or guardian is withdrawing money on behalf of the child, it can only be for the child’s sole benefit.

Please note that when a Junior Member turns 16 years of age, control of the account will be with the account holder as they are then deemed to be a full adult member of South Dublin Credit Union.
